It is an Apache configuration file that applies to the directory it sits in and its subfolders. It is where you set redirects, compression, caching, headers and access restrictions.

Tick “Force HTTPS”: the rule redirects http to https with a 301. Before enabling it make sure the certificate is installed and the site opens over https.

In the site root (next to index) as .htaccess, or append the text to an existing file. Keep a backup: a syntax error causes a 500 error.

No. Nginx does not read .htaccess; its rules go into the server configuration. Our templates are for Apache only.

Not with this generator: it has only 12 ready templates. Password protection (.htpasswd) and custom 301 redirects must be set up another way.
