FAQ

Enter a domain or a sitemap.xml address and click Analyze. The tool finds the map through robots.txt or the standard paths, checks the XML, counts URLs and shows the lastmod share and warnings. No sign-up; the limit is 5 checks per minute.

It reads robots.txt first and takes every Sitemap: line, then tries /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml. If your map lives elsewhere and is not listed in robots.txt, enter its full address.

Invalid XML, an empty file, more than 50,000 URLs, a size over 50 MB and too small a share of URLs with lastmod. For an index file it lists the child sitemaps. It does not test status codes or indexing of the pages themselves.

It is a rough 0–100 figure: 40 points are deducted for an empty map, 20 for XML errors, 15 for lastmod on fewer than half of the URLs and 20 for exceeding 50,000 URLs. A high score does not guarantee the pages get indexed.

For a sitemapindex file we show only the list of child sitemaps and their lastmod and do not open the child files. To count URLs, enter the address of the child map you need separately.

Yes, this check does not send the map to search engines. Google's help recommends submitting it in the Sitemaps report, which requires owner permission on the property. You can also list the map in a Sitemap: line in robots.txt.
