DNS inverso (PTR)

Determina el nombre de host a partir de la dirección IP mediante el registro PTR.

Datos clave

Check a PTR (rDNS) record online: enter an IP and see the hostname tied to it and whether it matches in the forward direction. Free, no sign-up. A PTR record is usually set by the owner of the IP block, the hosting provider, not by the domain owner.

Procesamiento
On our server: the PTR query goes through the server's DNS resolver (gethostbyaddr), then we check whether the name found points back to this IP
Entrada
An IP address (IPv4 or IPv6) or a hostname; a name is first resolved to an IP
Límites
30 checks per minute per IP; no sign-up; one address at a time; the forward check compares only a single IPv4 address of the name
Resultado
The hostname from the PTR record, the list of PTR records found and a flag showing whether the name's forward record matches the original IP

FAQ

A PTR record belongs to an IP address, not to a domain. Enter the domain's hostname: we first resolve it to an IP, then show the PTR record of that address and whether it matches the original IP.

Enter an IP address (or a hostname) and click Check. The tool requests the reverse record, shows the hostname and flags whether that name points forward to the same IP. No sign-up; the limit is 30 checks per minute.

A PTR maps an IP address to a hostname, so it works in the opposite direction from an A record. It matters for mail servers: many receivers check the sender's PTR when accepting mail and mark the message suspicious if it is missing.

Whoever controls the block of IP addresses: the hosting provider or ISP. PTR cannot be edited in the DNS panel of your domain; it is usually changed in the hosting panel or by a support request.

We take the name from the PTR and resolve it back to an IP. If the result differs from the original address, the pair is not confirmed. The check is simplified: it uses a single IPv4 address, so names with several A records may give false mismatches.

None is configured for that IP. Common cases are home-ISP addresses, new VPS instances and IPs without a purchased service. Ask the owner of the IP block (the host or provider) to create the record.

The hostname of an IPv6 address is determined, but a separate list of PTR records is requested only for IPv4. For a deep IPv6 analysis use command-line utilities such as dig -x.

Dónde somos más débiles: the check goes through one DNS resolver, the forward record is verified in a simplified way, there is no bulk check or history; many details of analogues could not be confirmed on their official pages.
