WHOIS — public data about domain registration: when created, until what date paid, who the registrar is, what name servers are. You can view them via WHOIS check. For SEO, this data is more useful than it seems.

When to Check WHOIS

How to Dig Deeper into History
WHOIS only answers the question of "when registered." To understand what has happened with the domain, three more things are looked at: the web page archive will show what the site was like before and whether the theme has changed; link services — what profile has been accumulated and whether there has been a spike in junk links; domain search — whether there are traces of the previous project. For a drop, this is a mandatory procedure: a domain with history can carry someone else's problems, and sorting them out is more expensive than starting from scratch.
Why Some Data is Hidden
Owner contacts in most zones are closed by data protection rules — instead of a name, you will see a registrar placeholder. This is normal and does not indicate problems.
