ASN and Website IP Address: What the Check Shows
Every website has an IP address, and behind that address is an autonomous system: the provider or hosting network with its own number. You can check which network the address belongs to using ASN lookup, and find other websites on the same address using reverse IP lookup.
What This Provides in Practice
- Understand where the site actually resides. Hosting, cloud, or attack protection network — this is visible from the network owner.
- Evaluate the neighborhood. Cheap shared hosting, where hundreds of questionable quality sites share one address, is not the best company.
- Check if the address is on blacklists — this affects email deliverability: see blacklist check.
- Figure out the geography. The network indicates in which region the server is physically located.
Is a Dedicated IP Needed?
A separate address does not provide a ranking advantage — this is an old myth. The real reasons to get one are different: your own email reputation if you send a lot; payment system requirements; high load when server neighbors interfere. For a regular website, a shared address is normal, and it's better to invest money in speed and content.
Does This Affect Rankings?
Neighborhood by IP alone is not a ranking factor, and a “bad neighbor” does not lower your site. Other things matter: server response speed, availability, and whether your address is blocked due to others' mailings. Therefore, looking at the network is worthwhile not for a mythical factor, but for diagnostics.
