Checking Keyword Cannibalization
How to see that multiple pages of yours compete for one query, where it comes from, what to do about it, and when overlap is not a problem.
Cannibalization is a situation where multiple pages of yours compete for one query. The search selects one, often not the right one, and the signals are diluted. You can find such overlaps on the site by checking for cannibalization.
How It Looks in Data
- For one query in Search Console, two to three of your pages are shown.
- The position for the query "jumps" — the search iterates which page to show.
- The target page gives way to a secondary one: an article instead of a service card.
- Both pages are in the third decade and neither is growing.
Where It Comes From
| Reason | Example |
|---|---|
| Pages for each synonym | "buy windows" and "order windows" — as separate addresses |
| Article and commercial page on the same topic | Service overview in the blog competes with the service itself |
| Different sections on the same | Category, subcategory, and tag with identical content |
| Pagination and filters | The second page of the list ranks instead of the first |
What to Do
- Determine the main page for the query — the one that best meets the intent.
- Merge if the pages duplicate each other: transfer valuable content and set a 301 redirect.
- Separate by meaning if both are needed: one answers "how to choose," the other sells.
- Reconfigure internal linking: internal links with the right anchor should lead to the main page.
- Check canonical addresses — see analysis.
Not Every Overlap is a Problem
If two of your pages are shown for a query and both are in the top 10, you occupy more space in the results — this is more of a plus. It’s worth analyzing cases where pages interfere with each other and neither moves ahead.Quick Check via Search Console
- Open the queries report and select a specific query.
- Switch to the pages tab — it will show all addresses that were displayed for it.
- If there are more than one address and their positions are close, this is the overlap.
- Compare their content: merge duplicates, separate different intents.
How to Avoid in Advance
Group queries by intent before writing pages: if the search shows the same results for them, only one page is needed. This is about semantic core and term analysis.
FAQ
How to understand that there is cannibalization?
For one query in Search Console, several of your pages are shown, the position jumps, and the page you are promoting is not ranking.
Is it always bad?
No. If both pages are in the top 10, you occupy more space in the results. It’s worth analyzing cases where pages interfere with each other.
What to do with two similar pages?
Either merge with a redirect to the main one, or separate by intent: one answers a question, the other sells.
