Can Google impose penalties for such links

Straight answers 2 min read Updated 12.09.2026
How algorithmic devaluation differs from manual penalties, why incoming links are rarely punished, what really increases the risk, and what to do if a notification arrives.

The question is: "Can my site be penalized for purchased links?" The honest answer consists of two parts. Yes, penalties for links exist and are formally possible. No, this is not the most likely outcome: much more often links simply stop being counted, and you lose not positions, but money.

Two different mechanisms

What happensLinks stop passing weightThe site is manually assigned a downgrade
How to knowNo way directly: there is simply no effectNotification in Search Console, section "Manual actions"

Why incoming links are rarely punished

The reason is technical: the site owner cannot influence incoming links. If downgrades were assigned automatically, any competitor could easily drop another site by purchasing junk links. Therefore, search engines default to ignoring them — it is safer for the quality of the results.

This leads to the main rule for choosing a contractor: you should not look at scary stories about bans, but at whether the links will be counted at all. A link from a site that is not indexed is not dangerous — it is useless. Therefore, we measure indexability and weight transfer for each platform.

What actually increases the risk

  • Speed. A sharp spike in link mass on a young domain looks unnatural. This can be remedied by natural mode and breaking the budget into several launches.
  • Anchors. Overstuffing exact commercial anchors is the oldest and most recognizable signal. See anchor plan.
  • Uniformity. When all links lead to one page with one anchor from similar platforms.
  • Quality of platforms. Networks created solely for links are recognized by their common footprint — this is a separate article about network footprint.

If a notification arrives

  1. Open Search Console → "Manual actions". Without a notification, there are no penalties, regardless of what third-party "ban checkers" show.
  2. Export the list of incoming links and find patterns: domains, anchors, period.
  3. Form a disavow file and upload it to Search Console.
  4. Submit a reconsideration request describing what exactly you have done.

The list of all our publications for the project is exported from the report, including in PDF — it can be used as a basis for disavow if you decide to refuse placements.

What we do not say
We do not claim that the risk is zero. We assert that it is manageable: the quality of platforms is measured, the volume and pace are set by you, and the list of placements is open and can be exported at any time.

FAQ

How to know if there is a penalty?
Only in Search Console, section "Manual actions". Third-party "ban checkers" do not see this — they do not have access to Google data.
Can competitors harm my site by purchasing links?
This is the reason why incoming links are usually ignored rather than punished: otherwise, it would be trivial to drop someone else's site.
Can I refuse your links?
Yes. A complete list of publications is exported from the report, including in PDF, and it can be used as a basis for a disavow file.
