Average Position in Google: How It Is Calculated
The average position is the average rank of a page in Google search results over a period. If the report shows 8.4, the page has never been "at eight point four": for some queries it was fourth, for others it was twenty-sixth, and Google combined this into one number.
How This Number Is Calculated
The position is recorded not once a day, but at each impression: the highest position at which the page appeared in the results for that query is taken, and all such values are averaged over the period. Hence the fractional nature: this is an average of thousands of measurements, not a "ranking position".
| Query | Impressions | Position |
|---|---|---|
| buy bicycle kyiv | 800 | 4.0 |
| bicycle cheap | 200 | 26.0 |
| Average for the page | 8.4 | |
PromoPilot averages the position weighted by impressions: a query with 800 impressions affects the result four times more than a query with 200. At the same time, variations of the same address are combined — with and without a slash, with parameters at the end.
Why the Number Jumps
- The set of queries changes. The page "caught" a new query at the 40th position — the average worsened, although nothing changed for the main queries.
- Personalization and region. The results differ by devices, countries, and cities, while the metric is a general mix.
- Data comes with a delay. Search Console provides statistics with a lag of two to three days.
- A short window creates noise. Over a day, the average jumps, but over 28 days, it shows a trend.
Where It Appears in PromoPilot
| Location | What Is Shown |
|---|---|
| “Pulse” Link | Current position and dynamics chart. The growth badge appears only when the improvement exceeds the noise threshold. |
| Project Card | Badge “At the Top Threshold”: how many pages are in positions 4–20. |
| “Radar” | Pair “current position → realistic goal” for each candidate page. |
| Launch Report | Block “Search Result”: position at the start and after 30, 60, 90 days. |
| Chrome Extension | Tab “Potential”: position of the open page over 28 days. |
What to Consider Normal
There is no universal norm; it all depends on the competition in the niche. A guideline is as follows: positions 1–3 bring the majority of clicks, 4–10 provide noticeable traffic, 11–20 almost none, and beyond that — practically nothing. Moving from 26th to 18th looks good in the report, but adds almost no clicks; moving from 8th to 4th adds them significantly.
How to Influence It
The position is determined by the relevance of the page and its authority. The first can be fixed with content and technique — here a technical audit helps. The second involves external links, which is the work of the cascade. Pages that are close to the top move the fastest: how to find them is described in the article on choosing a page.
Common Reading Errors
- Comparing the page position with the position for a single query. These are different metrics: in the page report — the average for all its queries at once.
- Being alarmed by a drop after an increase in impressions. When a page starts appearing for new queries, the average almost always worsens, while traffic increases.
- Measuring over one day. Compare windows of equal length: 28 days to the previous 28.
