Referring Domains: Why They Are Considered More Important Than Links
Referring domains — the number of unique sites that link to you. This metric is more important than the total number of links: one hundred links from one domain and one hundred links from one hundred domains are fundamentally different situations.
Why Domains Are More Important Than Links
Links from one site are counted with diminishing returns: the second, tenth, and hundredth provide less value. A new domain is a new independent "voice," so the growth of referring domains usually correlates better with visibility growth than the increase in the number of links.
What to Look for in the Profile
| Metric | What It Indicates |
|---|---|
| Number of referring domains | Profile width |
| Ratio of links to domains | Very high — a sign of manipulation from a few sites |
| Growth dynamics | Steady growth is better than spikes — see growth rate |
| Share of dofollow | A profile made up only of dofollow links looks unnatural |
| Thematic relevance of donors | At least some should be close to your niche |
How We Calculate This
In the cascade report, each publication is a separate page on the platform, and the number of unique domains is limited by the size of the pool and the limit on repetitions per platform. Therefore, a large launch of links has more than new domains — and this is normal. The composition of the pool and the rules for rotation are described in the article on selecting platforms.
Quality Is More Important Than Quantity of Domains
One hundred domains with real traffic and themes close to yours weigh more than a thousand random ones. Therefore, when comparing with competitors, one should look not only at the number but also at the composition: how many among the donors are truly visited sites, whether there are niche publications, and what share is made up of directories and aggregators. A balanced profile from diverse sources is more stable than a set of similar platforms.
Where to Look
Your profile can be found in Search Console and link services; a summary assessment of profile strength in the dashboard is discussed in the article “Strength of the Link Profile”.
