Semrush alternatives in 2026: cheaper options for audits, keywords and rank tracking

Semrush starts at $139 a month. We split its job into tasks (site audit, keyword research, rank tracking and backlinks) and compare what SE Ranking, Serpstat, Ahrefs, free Google tools and PromoPilot's pay-per-use products cost for each in October 2026, including where PromoPilot is not cheaper and what only a full suite can do.

Semrush alternatives in 2026: cheaper options for audits, keywords and rank tracking

Semrush starts at $139 a month. For an agency that lives in it every day, that is fair. For a small site that needs an audit, some keyword research and a few rankings checked, most of that money pays for features that never get opened. This guide splits the Semrush job into tasks and shows, for each task, what the real alternatives cost in October 2026: SE Ranking, Serpstat, Ahrefs and its free webmaster tools, Google's own free tools, Screaming Frog, and our own pay-per-use products. One thing up front: PromoPilot is not a replacement for Semrush as a whole. We have no backlink database and no competitor traffic estimates. What we can do is cover three common tasks without a subscription, and we will say plainly where that stops being cheaper.

The short answer

ToolStarting price (October 2026)Free optionBest for
SemrushFrom $139 a monthSite Audit for 100 pages a month; 7-day trialFull competitive research, backlinks, PPC, content, one login for everything
SE RankingCore $129 a month ($103 a month billed yearly)14-day trialAn all-in-one suite with daily rank tracking for 2,000 keywords on Core
SerpstatIndividual $50 a month7-day trial for $1A cheaper suite, interface in Russian and Ukrainian too
AhrefsFrom $29 (Starter) to $449 a month (Advanced)Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: 5,000 audited pages a month per verified siteBacklink research; free audit of your own sites
Google Search Console and Keyword Planner$0Free; Keyword Planner needs a Google Ads account with billing set upYour own site's real queries; search volume estimates
Screaming Frog SEO Spider$279 a year500 URLsTechnical audits on the desktop
PromoPilotPay per use: audit $5, rank check $0.01, SERP snapshot $0.005 per keyword100-page audit, keyword collection and volumes, 50 rank checksOccasional audits, keyword research and weekly rank tracking with no subscription

If you need backlink data or want to see a competitor's traffic, look at the suites in this table. If you mostly need audits, keywords and a modest number of rankings, splitting the work between free tools and pay-per-use tools can cost a fraction of a subscription.

What Semrush does that we cannot

Before any comparison, the limits. A "Semrush alternative" article that hides these is not worth reading, so here is what you lose if you leave a suite for PromoPilot or for free tools:

Backlink databaseSemrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Serpstat crawl the web and let you see who links to any site. We do not have a backlink index, so competitor link research is not possible with our tools.
Competitor traffic and keyword gapsEstimates of how much organic traffic a competitor gets and which keywords bring it are a suite feature built on huge keyword databases. We have nothing like it.
PPC and advertising researchCompetitor ad copy, ad history and paid keyword research are outside what we do.
Content marketing and media monitoringTopic research, content audits at scale, brand mention monitoring and social tools are part of the Semrush platform. We offer small AI helpers for briefs and content plans, not a content platform.
Rank tracking at scaleOur rank tracker charges per check. Daily tracking of thousands of keywords costs more with us than with a subscription tracker. The numbers are below.

If two or more of these are central to your work, a suite is the right tool, and the question is only which one. If they are not, read on.

Split the job into tasks

Most small sites use Semrush for four things: a site audit, keyword research, rank tracking and an occasional look at backlinks. Each task has its own cheapest reasonable option.

The alternatives, one by one

All-in-one suite

SE Ranking

The closest like-for-like Semrush alternative at a lower price. Core costs $129 a month, or $103 a month on yearly billing, and includes daily rank tracking for 2,000 keywords and a website audit of 250,000 pages a month. It tracks Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, the interface is available in 10 languages including Russian and Ukrainian, and AI add-ons start at $89 a month. There is a 14-day trial.

Best for: agencies and in-house teams that want one suite with serious rank tracking for less than Semrush.
Budget suite

Serpstat

The Individual plan is $50 a month, with 100 searches a day and 10,000 rank checks a month. A 7-day trial costs $1. It has keyword research, backlinks, audit and rank tracking in one place, and an interface in Russian and Ukrainian.

Best for: a freelancer or a small team that needs suite features on a small budget.
Backlinks

Ahrefs and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools

Ahrefs plans run from $29 a month (Starter) to $449 a month (Advanced). For your own sites, the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is the most generous free option in this list: a site audit of 5,000 pages a month for each site you verify, plus a view of its backlink profile (up to 1,000 links). It only works on sites you can verify.

Best for: backlink research (paid) and a free audit of your own sites (Webmaster Tools).
Free

Google Search Console and Keyword Planner

Search Console shows the real queries, clicks and average positions of your own site, which no third-party tool can replace. Keyword Planner gives search volume estimates and keyword ideas for free, but you need a Google Ads account with billing set up.

Best for: everyone. Start here before paying for anything.
Desktop audit

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

The standard desktop crawler: 500 URLs free, $279 a year for the full licence. It covers technical audits in more depth than any suite's site audit, but only audits. We compared it with cloud audits in our article on a free Screaming Frog alternative.

Best for: technical SEOs who crawl often.

PromoPilot: three tasks, no subscription

Our products share one prepaid balance in US dollars, and none of them needs a subscription. You see the price before anything is charged. Here is what each one does and what it costs, including the parts that are not cheap.

Site audit

SEO Audit: $5 per site up to 5,000 pages

A cloud crawler with 65 issue types in six categories. The free express audit covers 100 pages, up to 30 runs a day, with a free account and no card. The full audit costs $5 for a site up to 5,000 pages or $25 up to 50,000, one-off, and includes a written AI report in English, Polish, Russian or Ukrainian, a comparison with the previous crawl, Google index count, Core Web Vitals for a sample of pages and an AI visibility check. Any public site can be audited without verification.

The limits: no scheduled full audits (only automatic monitoring every 30 days), no XLSX export or API, JavaScript rendering is automatic only, and the ceiling is 50,000 pages per audit.

Compared with Semrush: its Site Audit offers 100 pages a month free and 20,000 pages per audit on the base plan, with scheduling. Ours is cheaper for occasional audits and lacks scheduling.
Keyword research

Keyword Studio: free collection, $0.005 per SERP snapshot

Collect keywords from Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and YouTube suggestions, your Search Console, a competitor's URL, AI ideas or a CSV. Search volumes and CPC come from Google Keyword Planner, and you do not need your own Ads account for that. Lexical clustering, negative keywords and CSV/XLSX export are free.

What costs money: a top-10 SERP snapshot is $0.005 per keyword and gives keyword difficulty, SERP features, "People also ask" questions and SERP-based clustering from the same snapshot. Snapshots are cached for 14 days, and re-using a cached one is free. AI operations such as a page brief or a content plan cost $0.02 each.

The limits: Keyword Studio works with your seed keywords and sources; it is not a database where you type a competitor's domain and see all its rankings. Google Trends data comes from an unofficial source and is not always available.

Example: difficulty and SERP data for 500 keywords costs $2.50.
Rank tracking

Rank Tracker: $0.01 per check, with an honest catch

One check is one keyword in one country on one device, top 30 by default ($0.01) or top 100 ($0.04). You choose manual, weekly or daily checks, desktop and mobile, with Search Console import, drop alerts by email and a weekly summary. New users get 50 checks free.

The catch is daily tracking at volume. Daily checks of 100 keywords in one country on one device cost about $30 a month with us. SerpRobot covers the same with two $4.99 "bots" for about $9.98. Daily tracking of 2,000 keywords would cost about $600 a month with us, against $129 for SE Ranking Core and $224 for AccuRanker Professional. We also track Google only, in 10 countries plus worldwide, with no city-level tracking and up to 1,000 keywords per project.

Plainly: if you track 500 or more keywords every day, take a subscription tracker. Pay-per-check makes sense for weekly checks, small keyword sets and irregular tracking: 100 keywords weekly costs about $4.29 a month.

What it costs in practice: three scenarios

Prices of suites include many features, so a fair comparison starts from what you actually do in a month. These scenarios cover only audits, keyword research and rank tracking.

A month of audit, keywords and rankings for a small site Pay-per-use with PromoPilot versus entry subscription prices on official pages, October 2026. US dollars a month. PromoPilot, weekly ranks $11.79 audit + 100 keywords weekly + 500 SERP snapshots PromoPilot, daily ranks $37.50 same, but 100 keywords checked every day Serpstat Individual $50 entry plan of a full suite SE Ranking Core $129 $103 a month on yearly billing Semrush $139 entry plan, monthly A month of audit, keywords and rankings for a small site Pay-per-use with PromoPilot versus entry subscription prices on official pages, October 2026. PromoPilot rows: one $5 audit, 100 keywords checked weekly or daily at $0.01 per check, SERP data for 500 keywords at $0.005. Subscriptions include much more, such as backlinks and competitor data.

Agency: 2,000 keywords daily, regular audits, backlink researchAbout $600 a month for tracking alone, no backlinksSE Ranking $129, AccuRanker $224, Semrush $139 and upSubscription

The middle row is the honest edge: once rankings need daily checks, our per-check price stops being the cheapest, and a dedicated daily tracker or a suite takes over. The free layer stays the same in every scenario: Search Console, Keyword Planner volumes through Keyword Studio, the 100-page express audit and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own.

Where Semrush is hard to replace

Semrush earns its price in situations where splitting the work does not help:

  • You research competitors every week. Their keywords, traffic estimates, top pages and backlinks in one interface is something no combination of free tools gives you.
  • You run PPC as well as SEO. Advertising research and keyword data for ads sit next to organic data.
  • Several people work in the same projects. Shared projects, reports and permissions are simpler in one suite than across four tools.
  • You need history. Suites keep historical keyword and traffic data for any domain; pay-per-use tools only have what you checked yourself.

For a large in-house team or an agency with dozens of clients, the $139 is often the cheaper option once you count time spent switching between tools.

Moving off Semrush without losing your work

If you decide to cancel, a little preparation keeps the switch painless:

  • Export your tracked keywords as CSV before the subscription ends. Keyword Studio imports CSV, and keywords can be sent from there to Rank Tracker, so your keyword list carries over even though the ranking history does not.
  • Save the last full site audit as a baseline. When you run a new audit elsewhere, you will want to know which issues were already known.
  • Connect Search Console everywhere. It keeps up to 16 months of query data for your own site, and both our audit and Keyword Studio can read it.
  • Decide which keywords really need daily checks. For most small sites, weekly checks of core keywords are enough, and that choice alone decides whether pay-per-check is cheaper.
  • Use trials for occasional competitor research. A $1 Serpstat trial for 7 days or a 14-day SE Ranking trial can cover a quarterly look at competitors without a permanent subscription; read the renewal terms before you start one.

Our products also connect to each other in one account: keywords from Keyword Studio go to Rank Tracker in one click, audit findings point to the pages worth fixing, and a page can be promoted with a link building cascade from the same balance. Cascades are a separate, prepaid product (from $30 per promoted page on the Basic plan), and only live, verified links count toward an order. Frequently asked questions

What is the best cheaper alternative to Semrush?
It depends on what you use Semrush for. For a full suite at a lower price, SE Ranking Core costs 129 dollars a month and Serpstat Individual 50 dollars a month in October 2026. For only audits, keyword research and occasional rank checks, free Google tools plus pay-per-use tools such as PromoPilot can cost around 12 dollars a month.

Is there a free alternative to Semrush?
Not for everything. Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools cover your own site's queries, keyword volumes and a free audit of verified sites. PromoPilot offers a free 100-page audit of any site and free keyword collection with Keyword Planner volumes. Competitor traffic and backlink research still need a paid tool.

Can PromoPilot replace Semrush?
No, not as a whole. PromoPilot has no backlink database, no competitor traffic estimates and no PPC research. It can replace Semrush for site audits, keyword research with SERP data and small-scale rank tracking, paying per use instead of a monthly subscription.

How much does Semrush cost in 2026?
In October 2026 Semrush plans start at 139 dollars a month, with a 7-day trial. The free Site Audit covers 100 pages a month. Prices change, so check the official pricing page before buying.

Is pay-per-check rank tracking cheaper than a subscription?
For weekly checks and small keyword sets, yes: 100 keywords weekly cost about 4.29 dollars a month with PromoPilot. For daily tracking at volume, no: 2,000 keywords daily would cost about 600 dollars a month, while SE Ranking Core includes them for 129 dollars. If you track 500 or more keywords every day, a subscription is cheaper.

Do I need a Google Ads account to see keyword volumes?
To use Google Keyword Planner directly, you need a Google Ads account with billing set up. In PromoPilot Keyword Studio, search volumes and CPC from Keyword Planner are shown for free without your own Ads account.
