Link building statistics 2026: 56 verified data points on backlinks, prices and AI search

Over 60 figures on backlinks, each linked to its original study with date and sample: the #1 result has 3.8× more backlinks than positions 2–10, 66.5% of links since 2013 are dead, an acceptable price for a quality link is $508.95, and in AI search branded mentions correlate 0.664 with visibility versus 0.218 for backlinks. Includes PromoPilot’s own 2026 research and a list of popular statistics we could not verify.

Link building statistics 2026: 56 verified data points on backlinks, prices and AI search

Link building statistics for 2026, each one checked against its original source. We collected over 60 data points on backlinks and rankings, link decay, prices, practitioner budgets, digital PR, Google's own statements and — the newest part — how links relate to visibility in AI search. Every figure below links to the study or page it comes from, with its date and sample. Where a widely quoted number could not be traced to a primary source, we left it out and say so at the end. Six of the statistics come from PromoPilot's own research published this year.

Key takeaways

  • Links still separate the top result from the rest. The #1 result has 3.8× more backlinks than positions 2–10 (Backlinko, 11.8M results), and only 2,997 of ~20 million pages with no referring domains get more than 1,000 visits a month (Ahrefs).
  • But there is no DR threshold for the top. In 35.8% of 2,754 Google results pages we analysed, the top three included a site with DR below 20 (PromoPilot, 2026).
  • Links decay fast. At least 66.5% of links created since 2013 are dead, and 74.5% are lost for SEO purposes (Ahrefs, 2M+ sites).
  • Prices keep rising. SEOs consider $508.95 an acceptable price for one high-quality link, and 80.9% expect costs to rise further (Editorial.Link, 518 SEOs, 2026).
  • In AI search, mentions beat links. Branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, backlinks only 0.218 (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands), and 84% of AI citations come from earned media (Muck Rack, 25M+ links).

What these numbers mean in practice

Takeaway 1

Links matter, but not as a single number

The top result has more links on average, yet low-DR sites reach the top three in a third of results pages. Judge each query by its own results page, not by a DR target.

Takeaway 2

Budget for decay

With two thirds of links eventually lost, a link profile needs maintenance. Replacement guarantees and steady acquisition matter more than one big campaign.

Takeaway 3

For AI visibility, be talked about

Brand mentions on pages AI assistants read correlate more strongly with AI visibility than raw link counts. Earned coverage and inclusion in "best of" lists are the new link building targets.

Numbers we did not include

Several statistics circulate widely but could not be traced to a primary source: a survey of 800 SEOs attributed to uSERP, a "State of Link Building 2026" report from Reporter Outreach, claims that AI Overview overlap with the top 10 fell from 76% to 38%, and an "average $50,000 per link" figure for iGaming. The original Authority Hacker survey (74.3% of link builders pay for links, $83 average) and Ahrefs' 2018 price study are only available through later articles, so we cite the later article and its date.
