Google Keyword Planner alternatives in 2026: free and cheap tools for SEO keyword research
Google Keyword Planner is free, but it needs a Google Ads account with billing, and low-spend accounts often see volume ranges. We compare the realistic alternatives in October 2026: Search Console, Google Trends, Mangools KWFinder, Serpstat, the big suites and PromoPilot Keyword Studio, which shows Keyword Planner volumes without your own Ads account. Honest limits included: Keyword Studio is not an independent database.
Google Keyword Planner is free, but it was built for advertisers, not for SEO. You need a Google Ads account with billing set up, and accounts that spend little or nothing on ads often see search volumes as wide ranges instead of numbers. That is why people look for an alternative to Google Keyword Planner. This guide compares the realistic options in October 2026: Google's other free tools, Mangools KWFinder, Serpstat, SE Ranking, the big suites, and our own Keyword Studio. One honest note before we start: Keyword Studio does not have its own search volume database. Its volumes come from Keyword Planner itself, through Google's official Ads API. So it is an easier way to the same data, plus SEO features around it, not a more accurate source.
The short answer
| Tool | Price (October 2026) | Search volumes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Keyword Planner | $0, needs a Google Ads account with billing | Google's own data; often ranges on low-spend accounts | Advertisers; anyone with an active Ads account |
| Google Search Console | $0 | No volumes; real impressions and clicks of your own site | Keywords your site already ranks for |
| Google Trends | $0 | No volumes; relative interest over time | Seasonality and comparing topics |
| PromoPilot Keyword Studio | Collection, volumes and lexical clustering $0; SERP data $0.005 per keyword | From Keyword Planner via the Ads API, as one rounded average, no Ads account of your own | SEO keyword research without a subscription |
| Mangools KWFinder | Free 5 lookups per 24 hours; Basic $49 a month | Own estimates with 12-month history | A simple interface for small projects |
| Serpstat | Individual $50 a month | Own database | A budget suite with competitor data |
| SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs | SE Ranking Core $129, Semrush from $139, Ahrefs $29 to $449 a month | Own databases | Competitor keyword research at scale |
If you already run Google Ads, Keyword Planner is still the place to start. If you do not, and you need volumes for SEO, the question is whether you also need competitor databases. If not, a free or pay-per-use tool covers most of the work.
Why look for a Keyword Planner alternative
- The Ads account. Keyword Planner lives inside Google Ads, so you have to create an account and set up billing even if you never plan to run an ad.
- Ranges instead of numbers. Accounts with little or no ad spend often see buckets such as "1K–10K". That is too coarse to choose between two similar keywords.
- Built for ads. Keyword Planner shows bids and ad competition, not how hard it is to rank organically. It does not tell you who is in the top 10 or which SERP features push results down.
- No grouping for pages. SEO needs keywords grouped into pages. Keyword Planner groups ideas by theme for ad groups, which is a different job.
Free Google tools first
Google Search Console
The Performance report in Search Console shows the real queries your site appears for, with impressions, clicks and average position. It does not show search volume for keywords you do not rank for, but for an existing site it is the most reliable keyword source there is. The queries on positions 4 to 20 are usually the fastest wins; we explain how to find them in our guide to striking distance keywords.
Google Trends
Google Trends shows how interest in a topic changes over time on a relative scale from 0 to 100. It is excellent for seasonality and for comparing two ideas, but it has no absolute numbers, so it cannot replace a volume tool.
Keyword Studio: Keyword Planner volumes without an Ads account
Keyword Studio is our cloud keyword tool. Here is exactly what it does, what is free and where it stops.
Collection, volumes, clustering and export
Collect keywords from Google, Bing, YouTube and DuckDuckGo suggestions, your Search Console, the pages of a site, Keyword Planner ideas, AI suggestions or a CSV file. For each phrase Keyword Studio requests data from Google Ads Keyword Planner through the official API: average monthly searches over the last 12 months as one rounded number, monthly history, competition and top-of-page bid range. You do not need your own Google Ads account. Volumes are available for 45 countries plus worldwide, in 29 languages.
Lexical clustering (grouping by word stems), negative keywords and export to CSV or XLSX are free too. You need a free PromoPilot account.
SERP data: $0.005 per keyword
A top-10 SERP snapshot costs $0.005 per keyword. One snapshot gives keyword difficulty, SERP features, "People also ask" and related searches, and SERP-based clustering, which groups keywords that share the same ranking pages. Snapshots are cached for 14 days, and re-using a cached snapshot is free for everyone. AI operations, such as a page brief or a content plan for a cluster, cost $0.02 each. You see the price and confirm it before anything is charged.
What Keyword Studio is not
It is not an independent volume database. The numbers are Google's own Keyword Planner data, rounded the way Google rounds them, so they are no more accurate than Keyword Planner with an active ad account. It is not a competitor research database either: you cannot type a domain and see every keyword it ranks for. Google Trends data comes from an unofficial source and is sometimes unavailable. There is no Yandex Wordstat and no Amazon suggestions.
Paid alternatives with their own databases
Mangools KWFinder
Known for a clean interface: a keyword list on the left and a panel with 12-month volume history, difficulty and the top 10 on the right. The free tier gives 5 lookups per 24 hours; the Basic plan is $49 a month with 100 lookups per 24 hours.
Serpstat
Individual costs $50 a month with 100 searches a day, and a 7-day trial costs $1. Besides keyword research it has competitor data, backlinks, audit and rank tracking, and an interface in Russian and Ukrainian.
SE Ranking, Semrush and Ahrefs
SE Ranking Core is $129 a month ($103 billed yearly), and its Keyword Grouper clusters keywords at $0.004 per query. Semrush starts at $139 a month; Ahrefs plans run from $29 to $449 a month. All three keep their own keyword databases with competitor rankings, history and gap analysis, which is what you pay for. We compared them task by task in our overview of cheaper Semrush alternatives.
What a month of keyword research costs
A typical small project: research 1,000 keywords once a month, with volumes and difficulty. The suites below include far more than this, so treat the chart as the cost of this one task, not a judgement of their value.
| Scenario | Keyword Studio | Subscription | Better value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blog: 300 keywords a month, volumes only | $0 | Mangools free tier is 5 lookups a day | Keyword Studio or Keyword Planner |
| Small business: 1,000 keywords a month, volumes and difficulty | $0 + 1,000 × $0.005 = $5 | Mangools Basic $49, Serpstat $50 | Keyword Studio |
| Agency: competitor keywords and gaps every week | Not possible, no competitor database | Serpstat $50, SE Ranking $129, Semrush $139 | Subscription |
The last row matters. If your work starts from "what does this competitor rank for", you need a database, and no free tool replaces it.
Who should choose what
| You are | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Advertiser with an active Google Ads account | Google Keyword Planner |
| Owner of an existing site | Search Console first, then volumes for new ideas |
| SEO without an Ads account who needs exact volumes and clusters | Keyword Studio |
| Blogger checking a few keywords at a time | Mangools KWFinder free tier, Keyword Studio |
| Freelancer or agency doing competitor research | Serpstat, SE Ranking, Semrush or Ahrefs |
| Anyone planning seasonal content | Google Trends alongside any volume tool |
Keyword Studio also connects to the rest of PromoPilot: keywords go to Rank Tracker in one click, and a page can be promoted with a link building cascade from the same balance. Cascades are a separate prepaid product, and only live, verified links count toward an order. To see how a keyword map is built in practice, read our Keyword Studio launch article.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to Google Keyword Planner?
Yes. Google Search Console and Google Trends are free but do not show search volumes. PromoPilot Keyword Studio shows Keyword Planner volumes for free with a free account and no Google Ads account of your own. Mangools KWFinder gives 5 free lookups per 24 hours.
Can I use Keyword Planner without running ads?
You can open it with a Google Ads account that has billing set up, without running a campaign. Accounts with little or no ad spend often see search volumes as ranges instead of exact averages.
Is Keyword Studio more accurate than Keyword Planner?
No. Keyword Studio takes its search volumes from Google Keyword Planner through the official Ads API, so the numbers are the same Google data. The difference is that you get one rounded average and a monthly history without your own Ads account, plus SEO features such as clustering and keyword difficulty.
How much does Keyword Studio cost?
Keyword collection, search volumes, lexical clustering and export are free. A top-10 SERP snapshot with keyword difficulty costs 0.005 dollars per keyword, and AI operations cost 0.02 dollars each. There is no subscription, and the price is shown before anything is charged.
Which countries does Keyword Studio support for search volumes?
In October 2026 Keyword Studio requests Keyword Planner volumes for 45 countries plus worldwide, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Poland, Ukraine, Germany and Spain, in 29 languages.
What can Keyword Planner alternatives not do?
Free tools and pay-per-use tools do not show which keywords a competitor ranks for. That needs a suite with its own keyword database, such as Serpstat, SE Ranking, Semrush or Ahrefs.
