Em Dash Remover and ChatGPT Text Cleaner
The tool turns an AI answer into plain text: it replaces em dashes using the rule you choose, converts smart quotes to straight ones or applies typographic quotes for your language, strips markdown — heading hashes, asterisks, list markers, code fences, tables and links — and optionally removes emojis, extra blank lines and invisible characters. Every edit shows up in a before/after comparison, and a counter shows how many replacements of each type were made. Runs in your browser, free.
How to Use
- Paste the AI answer (up to 100,000 characters) or click “Sample”
- Choose the em dash rule, the quote mode and the options you need
- Click “Clean text”, check the edits under “What changed” and copy the result
FAQ
How to remove em dashes from ChatGPT text
Paste the AI answer, pick a rule in the “Em dash” list and click “Clean text”. The result appears in a box ready to copy, and the “What changed” panel highlights every edit: removed text in red with a strikethrough, added text in green. A counter above the result shows how many dashes, quotes, markdown elements and blank lines were replaced.
| Mode | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| By context | A slow page is a lost customer — every single time | A slow page is a lost customer, every single time |
| By context | Page speed — this is what users notice first | Page speed - this is what users notice first |
| Always a comma | The tool — free and private — runs in your browser | The tool, free and private, runs in your browser |
| Spaced hyphen | fast—and free | fast - and free |
| Remove | Bottom line — start with robots.txt | Bottom line start with robots.txt |
Every mode except “Keep as is” shares a few rules: a dash at the start of a line (a dialogue line or a list item) becomes “- ”, a dash between digits with no spaces becomes a hyphen, and a dash before a period, comma or closing bracket, or at the end of a line, is simply dropped. A separate checkbox turns en dashes in ranges (“2024–2026”) and compounds into hyphens.
Why ChatGPT uses so many em dashes
The em dash is standard in edited prose — books, magazines and articles that language models learned from. Models lean on it for asides and contrasts (“it’s not a bug — it’s a feature”), and in 2025 heavy em dash use became one of the most talked-about tells of AI writing. The developers have not given an exact reason. You can ask the model to avoid em dashes in your prompt or custom instructions, but the request is not always followed, especially in long answers, so an em dash remover that cleans the finished text is more reliable.
Keep in mind that removing em dashes from AI text changes typography only. AI detectors score vocabulary, repeated structures and predictability, not a single punctuation mark. If you want text that reads as human, rework the wording first — the AI humanizer helps with that — then check the result with the AI detector.
When an em dash is the right choice
The em dash is not wrong; it is just overused. Read the result in these spots:
- Interruptions in dialogue: “I was going to—” A comma cannot replace a cut-off sentence; the tool drops a dash at the end of a line, so restore it by hand if it mattered.
- A dash before a list or a summary: “Three things matter — speed, links and content.” A colon is usually the best fix; “by context” produces a comma here, so edit it if a colon reads better.
- Emphatic asides: in a short, punchy sentence one dash is fine. Pick “Keep as is”, clean everything else, and remove the extra dashes manually.
How to remove markdown from ChatGPT text
Chatbot answers are full of markup: hash signs for headings, double asterisks for bold, asterisks or hyphens before list items, backticks around code. In the chat window they render as formatting, but in Word, an email, a social post or a CMS field without markdown support they show up as raw symbols. The “Strip markdown” option handles them like this:
| Markdown | Result |
|---|---|
## Heading | Heading |
**bold**, *italic*, _italic_, ~~strike~~ | Text without the symbols |
- item, * item, - [x] task | Item without the marker; “1.” numbering stays |
> quote | Quote without “>” |
``` code blocks, `code` | Code without the fences |
[text](https://…), image  | “text (https://…)”, the image alt text |
| Pipe tables | Rows with tab-separated cells |
---, *** | Horizontal rule removed |
Words with inner underscores (snake_case) and expressions like “2 * 3” are left alone: emphasis is stripped only when the symbols wrap a word. If you want to keep bold text in Word or Google Docs, do not strip markdown here; paste the text into an editor that understands markdown instead.
Smart quotes vs straight quotes
“Smart → straight” turns curly quotes and apostrophes into " and ', which is what code, CSV, JSON and many form fields expect. “Straight → typographic” with the EN style does the reverse: opening quotes after a space, a bracket or at the start of a line, closing quotes elsewhere, single quotes inside double ones, and a curly apostrophe in words like “it’s”. Note that WordPress converts straight quotes to curly ones on output (the wptexturize function), so straight quotes in the WordPress editor are fine.
Emojis, blank lines and invisible characters
“Remove emojis” is off by default because social posts often need them. When on, it removes ✅, 🚀, ✨ and multi-part emojis together with the space after them, while text-style symbols such as ©, ™ and arrows stay. “Remove extra blank lines” collapses three or more line breaks into one empty line and removes double and trailing spaces. Invisible characters are cleaned by the same engine as the invisible character remover, which also shows exactly which characters were in the text.
The order of the cleaning steps
The steps always run in the same order, and the order matters: invisible characters first, then markdown, emojis, dashes, quotes, and finally blank lines and spaces. Markdown goes before dashes, so a --- rule is removed as a whole instead of turning into hyphens, and a “- ” list marker is gone before the “dash at the start of a line” rule can fire. Blank lines and spaces come last to tidy up the gaps left where emojis and asterisks were removed.
A quick review before you publish
- Scroll through “What changed”: red fragments with no green replacement are removed markup, so make sure nothing you needed went with them.
- Search the result for “, this” and for “ - ” in mid-sentence — those are the spots where a colon or a restored dash usually reads better.
- Texts up to 100,000 characters are processed in full. If there are a great many edits the comparison is skipped, but the cleaned result is still ready to copy.
Typing dashes by hand
If you want a dash back in a few places: on Windows, Alt+0151 types an em dash and Alt+0150 an en dash (on the numeric keypad); on macOS use Option+Shift+hyphen and Option+hyphen. Word also autocorrects two hyphens between words into a dash.
