What to know about meta descriptions
- A meta description is not a direct ranking factor — it affects whether people choose to click.
- Google often shows a snippet from the page text instead when it better matches the query. That is normal.
- Google sets no length limit, but on desktop snippets usually get cut at about two lines (≈ 920 px, 150–160 characters); mobile can show more.
- Write a unique description for each page, not one template. Check what a page has now with the meta tag checker. Meta tag checker →

Free AI Meta Description Generator
The generator writes 6 meta descriptions — the short summary Google may show under your title in search results. Describe the page and main keyword, or just paste its URL: we read the title, H1, current description and opening paragraphs and ask the AI to stick to them rather than invent. Each variant shows its character count, approximate pixel width (will it fit two snippet lines on desktop), whether it contains the keyword, and a Google preview. Edit them right on the page and the counters update as you type. These are AI drafts: make sure they promise nothing the page does not deliver.
How to Use
- Describe what the page offers and for whom, or paste its URL
- Add the main keyword, choose the language and tone
- Pick a variant that fits and honestly describes the page, tweak it and copy
FAQ
Anatomy of a good meta description
A meta description is one or two sentences in the <meta name="description"> tag. In search results it sits under the title and answers the searcher’s question: “is this really what I am looking for?” A simple three-part structure works:
- What it is — the point of the page with the main keyword: “Running shoes fitted to your foot type.”
- Why here — one concrete reason: range, speed, price, experience, free returns. Only what the page really offers.
- What next — a soft call to action: “Find your pair in 3 minutes”, “See examples”.
Formulas by page type
| Page | Focus | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Key feature + buying condition | Trail 2 running shoes with a rock plate. Sizes 5–13, next-day delivery, 30-day returns. |
| Category | Range + the filter buyers care about | 200+ running shoe models for road, trail and flat feet. Compare by weight and cushioning. |
| Article | What the reader learns and who it is for | How to choose hosting for an online store: 7 things you should never skimp on, plus a pre-purchase checklist. |
| Service | Customer outcome + trust | Same-day iPhone repair in Austin with a 6-month warranty. Free diagnostics, genuine parts. |
Common mistakes
- One template for the whole site. Google almost always replaces such text with a snippet from the page.
- A comma-separated list of keywords. People will not click it, and Google will not show it.
- Promises the page does not keep. “Best prices” or “#1” without proof on the page sends people straight back.
- Quotes and special characters. A double quote inside the attribute can cut the description off in your HTML — the generator returns text without quotes.
How to work with the generator
You get the most accurate result when you give a URL: the AI sees the title, H1, current description and opening paragraphs and summarises those. If the page does not exist yet, put the facts it may mention into “What the page is about”: timing, price, warranty, audience. The variants take different angles — benefit, problem and solution, what you will learn, who it is for. Pick the one that describes the page most honestly, edit it in place and keep the width under ~920 px.
How to tell if it worked
Publish the new description, wait for Google to recrawl, and after 2–4 weeks compare the page’s CTR in Search Console with the previous period at a similar average position. Check that the tag is really on the page with the meta tag checker, and see the full snippet in the SERP preview. For the title above it, try the AI title generator.
