Other tools for the same job, and what each one does well:
- Vercel OG Image Playground — The playground for the @vercel/og library: images are described in code (JSX) — handy when previews must be generated automatically for every page.
- Canva — A design editor with social media templates; more flexible for design, but needs an account.

Free OG Image Generator
og:image is the picture social networks and messengers show in a link preview. A link with a large image stands out in the feed; without one, Facebook, LinkedIn, Telegram and X show an empty or random card. This generator draws the image on a canvas right in your browser: five templates, your title, subtitle and footer label, a logo and background photo, your colours and three sizes — 1200×630 (Open Graph), 1200×628 (X) and 1200×1200. The title sizes itself and wraps by word, and a safe-zone guide shows what survives a square crop. Download a PNG or JPG and paste the ready meta tags.
How to Use
- Choose a template and size
- Type the title, subtitle and label; add a logo or background
- Download the image, upload it to your site and set its URL in og:image
FAQ
Preview image sizes by platform
| Where | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook, LinkedIn | 1200×630 px (1.91:1) | Below 600×315 the image shrinks to a small thumbnail beside the text |
| X (Twitter), summary_large_image | 1200×628 px (2:1) | Up to 5 MB, JPG/PNG/WEBP/GIF; since 2023 link cards show only the image and domain |
| Telegram, Slack, Discord | use og:image | The same 1200×630 works |
| WhatsApp, iMessage | use og:image | Sometimes cropped to a square — keep key content in the centre |
One 1200×630 file covers almost every case. A separate image for X is only worth it if the exact 2:1 ratio matters to you.
What makes a good preview image
- A big, short headline — 4–8 words that read on a phone in the feed. The generator shrinks long titles, but shorter copy works better.
- Contrast — light text on a dark background or the reverse; on photos, darken the image (the “Photo overlay” template).
- A logo or domain so people recognise the source — especially on X, where cards have no title.
- A safe zone — keep what matters in the central square; switch on the guide to check.
- Under 300–500 KB — JPG is usually lighter for photos, PNG better for flat colours and text.
How to add the image to your page
- Download the PNG or JPG and upload it to your site (your CMS media library or images folder).
- Copy the meta tags from the generator into the page’s
<head>and replace the address with the fullhttps://URL of the file. - Test the page with the Open Graph checker and Twitter card validator — it downloads the image and checks size, weight and format.
- If an old preview is cached, upload the image under a new file name: networks cache images by URL.
When you need automation instead
For a blog or catalogue with hundreds of pages, images are generated on the server from each post title: WordPress has plugins, Next.js has the @vercel/og library, and other CMSs have their own extensions. This generator suits the home page, landing pages, key articles and one-off posts.
