Alt Text Generator
Free alt text generator: upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 5 MB or paste an image link — the AI describes it in three versions (short, descriptive, tailored to your page) in 15 languages and tells you if it looks decorative (then use an empty alt). The image is not stored. 15 generations a day without an account. Check that the description is accurate before publishing.
Good alt text in one minute
- Describe what matters on this page, not everything in the picture: the same photo can need different alt text on a product page and in an article.
- Decorative images (backgrounds, dividers, icons next to a text label) get an empty alt="", not a missing attribute — without alt, a screen reader may read out the file name.
- Linked images and buttons: the alt describes the action or destination (“Download the price list PDF”), not the look.
- Skip “image of…” / “photo of…” and never stuff keywords: Google explicitly calls keyword-stuffed alt attributes spammy. Around 125 characters is a common guideline, not a hard limit.

- Ahrefs AI Image Alt Text Generator — Free: JPG, PNG or GIF under 10 MB, an optional description and tone — 3 alt text variants.
- AltText.ai — Built for large catalogues: 130+ languages, WordPress, Shopify and other CMS integrations, and site scans; 25 free images, then from $5 a month.
When to choose this tool: When you have a few images and no account: three versions for different uses, one tailored to a specific page, an empty-alt hint for decorative images, WebP support, and the interface in Russian, Ukrainian or Polish. For hundreds of images, a service with a CMS plugin is more practical.

Free AI Alt Text Generator for Images
Alt text is the image description in the alt attribute: screen readers read it to blind and low-vision users, Google uses it to understand the image, and it shows when the image fails to load. Upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 5 MB or paste an image link, and a vision model suggests three versions — short, descriptive and tailored to your page — in one of 15 languages. If the image looks decorative, we tell you it needs an empty alt, and if it contains text, we show it. The image is processed in memory and never stored. Check the description before publishing: the AI can get details wrong.
How to Use
- Upload the image or paste a link to it
- Optionally say where it is used and give the page keyword; choose the language
- Pick the option that fits, check it is accurate and copy the alt or the HTML
FAQ
What to write for different kinds of images
Good alt text answers one question: what would someone miss if they could not see the image? The answer depends on why the image is on the page.
| Image type | What to write |
|---|---|
| Product photo | Product, model, colour and the detail that matters: “Trail 2 running shoes in blue, side view” |
| Illustration in an article | What it explains: “Diagram: website → CDN → visitor’s browser” |
| Linked image, button, header logo | Where it goes or what it does: “PromoPilot home”, “Download the price list (PDF)” |
| Chart or infographic | The takeaway in the alt (“Sales doubled in 2025”), the numbers in nearby text or a table |
| Screenshot | What matters for the text: “Search Console report filtered by page” |
| Background, divider, icon next to a text label | Empty alt="" |
Bad → good
- “IMG_2041.jpg” → “Window tables at a small coffee shop in Soho”
- “Photo of a dog” → “Golden retriever bringing back a ball in the park”
- “running shoes buy running shoes cheap best running shoes” → “Trail 2 running shoes on a rocky path”
- “Image showing a button” → “Book a consultation”
Alt vs title vs caption
alt replaces the image for screen readers and search engines. title is the hover tooltip: many screen readers ignore it and phones never show it, so it is not a substitute for alt. A caption (<figcaption>) is visible to everyone; if it already describes the image, keep the alt shorter so the two do not repeat each other.
How to use the generator
Fill in “Where the image is used” — for example, “product page for Trail 2 shoes” or “article about choosing hosting”. The page-specific option will then describe what matters in that place. Add a keyword only if it truly describes the image: the AI is told not to force it in. Check the details — the model can get a colour or a count of objects wrong or misread text. It will not guess people’s names or brands that are not visible: add them yourself if they matter.
How to find images without alt on your site
Run a page through the image SEO checker: it lists images with missing or empty alt, missing dimensions and lazy loading. For the bigger picture, use the SEO site audit. Shrink heavy files before publishing with the image compressor.
